The family was middle class, father Allen worked a labor job and mother Maisie babysat for neighbors during the day. Consequently, the house was always full of children when Laurence returned from school. A classic playground brute, Laurence was a hardy, rambunctious boy who reveled in sports and violence. Convinced he would join the army when he was older, Laurence had a somewhat detached, chilly relationship with his mother, who favored the more emotional Duncan. This distance would remain into adulthood. Laurence, nicknamed Larkin by schoolmates, was an average student who preferred to spend his free time nicking magazines and climbing hills. Aside from his army ambitions, Larkin also dreamed of leaving Glasgow, which he did as soon as he had finished school. On moving to London, Larkin worked odd menial jobs and dated a number of girls, at least one of whom worked as a model. When he joined her at castings for moral support, he himself caught the eye of the casting director, and was able to begin a quiet but steady stream of gigs. His agent made an attempt at leading man status with Troy, but low ratings assigned Larkin the role of a supporting villain in Chronicles of Riddick. Though the comfortable paychecks were nice, and the perks of traveling were equally excellent, the scripts being offered to him were less than exciting, and he made an executive decision when he decided to sign on for an HBO series. His agent warned against it, that television actors were often pigeonholed as such, that he'd never find himself headlining a blockbuster if he resigned himself to second billing on a premium channel show. But Larkin prevailed, as his stubbornness often allowed him to, and he worked diligently on Rome for two seasons until it was cancelled. The regular kind of scheduling that came with shooting a television series quite appealed to him, and he shelved a desire to return to the small screen after he was offered the lead role in what would be a box office failure Pathfinder. Four years and two films later, Larkin got what he wanted when he signed on to Game of Thrones. The epic fantasy series had him making a new on-set family and unexpected friends. A few iconic roles helped keep him in the public eye, even he did not choose later roles as wisely. From a vaguely memorable peripheral actor, Larkin became a household face if not a household name; he is certainly more recognizable by his character. He continued with films even after finding a comfortable home in Westeros, filming cult fav Dredd and Gone Girl as well as staying true to his Riddick roots by appearing in a second film as Vaako.
